Harold and Grace - Their Lives Were Music
"The Coat"

The Story of Grace's New Coat

Grace was 95 years old when she had her heart set on a dress coat she
could wear to church. It was hard to find one off the rack to fit her due to the
scoliosis Grace has had for a number of years. If the shoulders fit, we couldn't
get it buttoned in front. Grace weighted 125 pounds, but had a 45 inch waist.
Grace was delighted when I (Linda) told her I would make her coat.
We started with a pattern and an old sheet. Since the material was expensive
and we didn't want any mistakes.
(At that time I was coming to her house three times a week). Each time I
would try "The Coat" on her, she was so amazed. She was really going to
get a coat. To make the coat fit her, I replaced the back seam with a yoke
and large pleats in the back panel. It gave Grace the extra room needed.
We also added deep pockets for tissues. I hemmed the coat short in the
front and long in the back , but it looks straight when Grace had it on.
I brought six styles of buttons home for her to select from. She felt like
she had a hand in the making of this coat.
Grace was so proud of her new coat, she would tell anyone who would
listen. Linda made this coat for me. I had to wait until I was 95 years old
to get a custom made coat, and it fits!
